Nicole Portlock's Profile

About

I graduated with a B.A. (Hon) in Design (Ceramics) in 2007. In 2010 I gained my M.A. in the History of Art and Architecture. The full story of how I smoke fire can be found on my website www.nicoleportlock.com.

For me, smoke firing is like becoming a kid again. You feel the impatient eagerness of an anticipated present, knowing full well that you have to wait to see what you have been given. You need to dig around in the bottom of the smoke kiln, being careful not to damage any of the surfaces, this is akin to lucky-dip gifts at the funfair and playing in the dirt, albeit with heat resistant gloves on. If you are like me and used to secretly rattle your gifts when no-one was looking, then you will understand that I often put on my safety gear and gently dig around the top layer while the kiln is still going, but has burned down far enough to give a tentative glimpse.
