About

I am a jewelry designer and mixed media workshop instructor living in the beautiful natural surroundings of the mountains of western North Carolina. it is a pure and simple joy to have the ability to translate into mixed media art and jewelry the exquisite beauty of the world that is around me. using words, images, textiles, old found things is not "work", but play.

people ask how and why i do what i do. i've never been able to answer that. or what made me begin this jewelry process, if ever there was a time of beginning.

i've always been a gatherer - someone who walks through woods and fields, along the edges and shores of rivers and streams, and drags home sticks, nests, rocks that appeal to me. my sweet little log cabin in the woods, built by my parents and named Heartrock Hill, is filled to the brim with feathers,…

people ask how and why i do what i do. i've never been able to answer that. or what made me begin this jewelry process, if ever there was a time of beginning.

i've always been a gatherer - someone who walks through woods and fields, along the edges and shores of rivers and streams, and drags home sticks, nests, rocks that appeal to me. my sweet little log cabin in the woods, built by my parents and named Heartrock Hill, is filled to the brim with feathers, seashells, bowls of tumbled beach glass, rocks in the shape of a heart. it is only natural, then, that my penchant for all things connected with nature strongly carries over into my work.

we live in an age of expanded technology, of hurried, frantic schedules, reduced conversations, little actual mail, tv that focuses on war, on pain, on crooked politics. i don't choose to put my head in the sand, but do spend as much time as i can in the studio where i can channel my own emotions about my little world into the designs that i create.

i believe in story telling and the calming effect a good story has on most folks; i believe in the power of a single image with a few succinct words, and the way that those things when combined can take someone to another, quieter and gentler place.

if my work brings peace and calm - if it triggers a bittersweet memory or one imagined - if it brings to the wearer a way to reach out to total strangers by initiating conversation that might not have otherwise happened - then, i think that i have accomplished my goal as an artist.

let me know what stories these pieces bring to mind with you. tell me of your reactions, your emotions, when picking the piece up for the first time, when wearing it, when feeling the energy that i hope flows from my fingers into your heart.
