About

Nicholas Girling.

I run a graphic design studio in Melbourne Australia called Girling Design. The Otispepper art is the raw creative expression for me by me. Let me know if you like it.

PHILOSOPHY:

The Otispepper philosophy is to create a vibrant collection of art to have a wonderfully positive affect on your room. To create an eclectic mix of styles and subject, finding inspiration from everyday objects to elements of nature or even second hand objects looking for a new creative independence. It’s the focus on colour, texture and form that gives each item its own individual charm.

MY PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

Creating art and design makes me happy.
My philosophy is happiness, not at the expense of others and control, not at the expense of self.
Someone said that happiness is determined by your ability to feel like you control the things around yourself. But it's OK to be a bit out of control. Sometimes problems make life memorable and I don't want to live in a daze.

MY GOAL
My goal is to find my personal style via creative experimentation rather than me mimicking my last picture.

MY VALUES

I love my wife, my little tiny boys.
While I have traveled, I've been living in the same city for my entire life and I still get lost nearly every time I get in my car.
I live in a place where it can be warm one minute and very cold the next, then quite nice a few moments later in Melbourne Australia.

I love to be around my oldest friends when we laugh about times we have laughed.
I'm happiest when painting something that I think looks great.
I laugh at it when I paint something that I think is terrible but try to learn something about the reason why it looks terrible.
I have lived in a share house with all of my closest friends and it was a great time in many still to unfold.
I have wrinkles where I laugh but none where I frown.
I have a family of people who make me laugh and my mum still goes for the bait my dad has been dishing out forever.
I wish I knew what the best size sketch pad was for me rather than having countless pieces of paper everywhere.
I love to do things together but strive to love to do things on my own.
I'm quite reserved when I meet someone new but loud and fun afterwards.
I love to use cut paper because it can be so very iconic and raw.
The one art tool that I could not be without is my scalpel blade.

I've been painting and drawing for ever and have been a graphic designer for ages.
I was self taught before I sought to be taught.
My mother was a kinder garden teacher. She would take me to her work and When she taught, she placed me happily in front of an easel with enough paint to last me for ages. I can still remember the feeling I had when she opened the room where they keep all the craft materials. Oh, my god...there were poly styrene balls, and glue and paper, and little bits of wood and paint and pipe cleaners. And a whole lot of stuff that I had never seen before. I have to tell you that I was completely speechless. But we were only in there for a few moments and I was not tall enough or fast enough. But that's OK, we would meet again.

When the other kids were singing about mary and here little lambs, I was discovering that grey brown colour you get from mixing acrylic. And I always thought that the words to the song went - and the little boy who lived down the drain...
I design logos, brands and web sites for corporate businesses to support my family.
I really admire the work of Saul Bass and Paul Rand (RIP).
I look at words and typography as big shapes rather than words - I love blocky compressed fonts from the 50's

Im inspired by paint smudges on the road, old textured concrete, strange markings on lamp posts, songs that I've made up with friends, swiss design from the 50's and 60's.
I am competitive but wont rub your nose in it if I beat you.
I get very excited about being creative. I love to create things with other people for a greater purpose than just myself.
I have always wanted a mentor but have always found myself mentoring others.
I want to travel more with art and design and have been doing this recently which is so cool.
I get as excited about graphic design as I do about art because they are the same to me.
I love that words are the most inspirational thing for me when it comes to creating pictures.
