Joy McCartney's Profile

About

Al and I started leatherwork back in the hippy era of the early 70's. The style like many Australian leathercrafters was a rebellion against the vinyl mass produced products on one hand and the country style hand carved products which were just as repetitious as the factory made goods. Hobby became an alternative lifestyle business. Reality and children hit home and Al went back to a "proper job". As the children grew Al returned to leathercraft as the seachanges called.

My leathergoods are sewn using highly durable industrial thread, using an antique treadle powered Singer sewing machine. I prefer to use treadle power for control and the environment. Even the press I use for cutting out smaller intricate shapes is a hand powered swing press.

I do not use the cheap, boardy resurfaced split leather commonly used by mass producers. I only buy quality leather and make styles that suits the leather. I only use new leather and I concentrate on creating goods that are unique, comfortable and durable.

POSTAGE. I do not profit from postage Australia post does. I combine postage over my full range to save you money. Due to a quirk with US customs the maximum weight of any parcel is 500gm because it costs more to send one 1000gm parcel than two 500gm ones.
