“When we define the Photograph as a motionless image, this does not mean only that the figures it represents do not move; it means that they do not emerge, do not leave: they are anesthetized and fastened down, like butterflies.” ― Roland Barthes, Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography
If you love old photographs as I do, you may be aware of the term "punctum." Even if you aren't familiar with the word, you've almost certainly experienced it! Punctum is "the devil in the details" - a catch or mysterious hidden element. It is when a photo speaks to you, when something about it draws your gaze back again and again. Sometimes you immediately get it but other times you can't quite tell right away what is so arresting about the image. It may not be the main subject of the photo, but rather something in the background - some tiny detail - that attracts a person to a photograph.
Punctum strikes a personal chord that may be different for each viewer. My shop name, Phunctum, is an amalgam of the words punctum, funky, fun, and photo - I hope you'll find something you like here!
