I have been making handbags for ten years and art quilts for four years. Although I started out selling wholesale to boutiques in Texas, I now enjoy selling my work at art shows all across the country. It is a much more rewarding and stimulating experience: I love talking to people and explaining techniques that I have developed.
It takes me two to twelve hours to make a handbag and many more hours to complete an intricate quilt. I create all the art myself. I don’t have any assistants. None of my designs are computerized. Free-hand embroidery is much like using the sewing machine as a drawing tool: to create my design I move the fabric itself in and around the stationary needle. I consider my bags to be limited editions, the most of any one style I have made is fifteen, and even then, I will change up colors or other elements.
