Karen Gibbs' Profile

About

I was born in NY and lived most of my life there on Long Island, but when cold winters and ice there became too much to bear because of my physical disabilities. My legs are weak but my talents and determination are strong. I migrated with the birds to sunny Florida.

Here in Florida I am constantly impressed with its beautiful landscapes of moss covered grand oaks, of huge graceful birds in their splendid colors, the great manatee swimming in the crystal clear rivers and the hungry pelican picking fish from the waters. All of these visions I have tried to capture in my quilts.

I love the quilting process. I use heavy quilting to bring my quilts to life, to give it more dimension. You want to reach out and stroke the teddy bears fur and its eyes give you the impression that they see you. Different patterns are stitched to give movement to water or…

Different patterns are stitched to give movement to water or fluffiness to clouds. No two quilts are exactly the same.

This love that I hold for the quilting is deeply etched in my soul. My Grandmother was a seamstress and from a young age I was often found by her side digging through bolts of fabrics. So finding myself drawn to textiles and art I began to appreciate quilting. I studied the craft and its place in history and became hooked. It is now both my passion and my therapy! I enjoy designing accessories to go with my quilts and try to use up every inch of remnants to make them.

I hope the recipient of my quilts enjoy its warmth and understand the love and purpose I put in every stitch. I can touch people in my own special way by combining embroidery and quilting. I like to add labels to my quilts that I create for that specific quilt, upon request I will personalize it at no additional cost and hand stitch it to the back.

I joined ETSY so that I could share my art with others. My quilts offer a warm fuzzy feeling, whether you wrap one around yourself or just look at it. That's the beauty of it, it can stay with you forever.
