I feel like this profile has pushed me to define how I feel about painting. I want my words to accurately describe what watercolors are to me but I don't know that words will ever be enough. Simply put, I need to create. I love projects. I love to make things. More than anything, I love to paint. It is a driving force in my life. It is wrapped around all my thoughts; it is the filter through which I see the world. Sometimes it is so much apart of me that I forget that others are not studying the trees and mountains for value changes. It is my hope, though, that my paintings allow…

It is my hope, though, that my paintings allow others to see my world view.

I have the hardest time not dropping everything when I get an idea (which is bad when I am putting away dishes.) So some days I do run with an idea and see where it leads me. When I step back and view my piece, I amazed to have been a part of the process. Other days I ponder and plan how to approach a piece all day. When I finally attempt it and it ends up overworked and messy, I get upset. It's not enough, though, to stop me from trying the next day, or even the next hour. I had a teacher tell me you get worse right before you get better because you are pushing yourself into unfamiliar territory.

Watercolors are my escape from the world. They give me hope in all the good that exists. I paint to be happy. I get grumpy after a few days of not painting. Sometimes I get so busy that I forget how happy they make me. I mope around for a while and think, "What's wrong?" Then it dawns on me..."Oh, yeah, I haven't painted in awhile."

I have been studying art since 1992. I attended college, graduating in Elementary Education with an art emphasis. Then I taught fifth and sixth grade for six years; now I pursue my art full time. I take particular care as I create each piece in my petfree, smokefree home. As much as I love my dogs, they have their own home out back.

I currently teach private watercolor lessons. I have won several awards including Utah Watercolor Society Honorable Mention. I am also a two star member of the Utah Watercolor Society. I have art hanging at Barclay Butera in Park City, Utah and Repartee Gallery in Provo, Utah as well.

One of my greatest accomplishments is the private show I did with my father, Richard Beck, who also paints watercolors. When I stopped teaching elementary school, my father also retired from his career in the medical industry. Since that time we have worked together to support and pursue our art goals. We paint together weekly and take several trips each year to gather subject matter for our works. I wouldn't be able to do any art without the support of my mom, dad and husband.

I love to paint a variety of subjects. Growing up in both Ohio and Utah, my family often took road trips. As we drove I would study the countryside. Now I love painting rural America in my works. My favorite subject to paint, though, is people. I love to tell a person's story with my paintings. Even though watercolors are difficult, I still prefer them to oil. The challenges they pose are all part of the fun for me.
