My Hawaiian kupuna or grandmother once told me that no matter where I should travel, or establish myself, my roots would always be in Hawaii. Not only because I was born there, but because, as she put it "you are a child of the aina-the land".
Those simple words of wisdom have always given me permission to be the Hawaiian Wahine that I am, no matter where I am, or in whose company I find myself. I celebrate that freedom!
Growing up in Hawaii was like living in a cosmopolitan test tube. Just when you think you have met someone from every imaginable culture, who has come to call Hawaii home, even if temporarily-someone crosses your path at an event or gathering from some far off place that most Americans have never heard of, much less familiar with.
