ROB CROXFORD, A NOT-SO-SHORT- BIOGRAPHY

Rob who almost never speaks in 3rd person, grew up on a lovely cul-de-sac in the suburbs of London, Ontario. Never one for sports, Rob showed at a tender age, a zest for design. After a failed attempt at an Interior Design Diploma, Rob moved to Toronto to study Theatre Technical Production. After graduating with this B.F.A., Rob worked as a Scenic Artist painting scenery for the stage and film. How glamourous! (not so much) Some of the highlights were painting for the Shaw Festival and the Canadian Opera Company. Rob eventually took a job painting murals for casinos, to pay off his enormous student debt! After years of “working for the man”, Rob decided to venture out on his own.

For the past 5 years, Rob has painted his own artwork full-time to refine his techniques and cultivate his artistic voice. In this time, he has exhibited in 16 Outdoor Art Shows as well several gallery exhibitions including; Gallery 129 Ossington, Liss Gallery, and The Lonsdale Gallery (in Toronto) as well as Terrence Robert Gallery (Ottawa), SOPA Gallery (British Columbia), Pennelo Gallery (Cleveland) and well as part of both The Artist Project and The Toronto International Art Fair.

In 2010, Rob had a banner year!! He was featured in a coffee table book, was purchased by the City of Toronto Art Collection and became the first artist to be sent to space. (Ok, that last one might be a lie - but it was still a pretty solid year!)

Here is my joe-pro artist statement:

"Rob’s work appropriates quotes & through irony/word puns/satire, re-invents the subject matter to draw attention to current issues. By mimicking advertising iconography from pre-1950, Rob establishes a ‘vintage’ visual look in his paintings. This unapologetically happy style enables the work to remain accessible, and helps diminish the political sting. Rob hopes that his work entertains but also challenges people to re-assess their opinions about our values and our traditions."

Rob, as an artist/entertainer/activist/smarty-pants, is always looking for new ways to challenge and amuse!
