About

I am a designer/maker working mostly on hand-crafted leather and textile bags. Each bag is a unique project, carefully made to a very high standard using quality materials. I only use grade "A" leather hides: the industry's highest standard. Most of my bags are hand-sewn using pure linen thread. I also use a Singer 29K, made over a hundred years ago and still going strong. My bags are designed to last pretty much forever, and I offer a life-time guarantee for normal usage, and a comprehensive repair and remodelling service.

The textiles used in my bags are from the top English traditional designers, including Liberty and Osborne & Little, if you know fabrics, you will recognize the exceptional design and quality of their fabrics. Primarily, these textiles are designed for use in the upholstery and furnishing trades. They are intended to last for a long time, with plenty of wear and tear…

They are intended to last for a long time, with plenty of wear and tear. Many of them are high in natural fibres like silk and cotton, but with a helpful manmade content for durability and strength. The linings are carefully selected to be as beautiful and colourful as the exteriors.

The inspirations for my bags are usually from the leather itself, especially the grain and colour. I generally use 2mm thick, slightly waxy, flexible leather with the excellent colour and finish of the "veg tan" process. Vegetal tanning gives strong colour through the entire hide and a pleasant aroma and finish. I love simple, unfussy shapes and use large pieces in my designs. I am inspired by the work of Ezura Yoshimi, a Japanese designer whose work I greatly admire. Otherwise all my work and my designs are original.

I would describe my work as design-led traditional craft with a contemporary feel and look.
The style of my work is classic, distinctive, and beyond fashion, and my hope is that the owner of a Sarah North bag derives many years of use and pleasure from it.

I also repair leather bags, and would be happy to give a quote if emailed a photo of the item.
