alquimia's Profile

About

alquimia is the collective's name because the three of us transform rustic, unusual, collected, found, & natural materials into works of art at least as precious as gold.

Nahu is the artist and craftswoman behind our distinctive Macrame section. She uses waxed polyester thread of the highest quality because of its resistance, color saturation, and durability. Colors and weave hold up to water, sunlight, and constant wear. With great deliberation, Nahu handpicks stones for color and cut. As often as possible, stones come directly from their source and are cut exactly to her specifications. The combinations of stone and weave are completely one-of-a-kind and made by hand. The artist lives and creates in Guatemala.

SeeknSea's Metalwork section is the domain of Panda, an artist, poet, and jewelrymaker from Honduras who works with nickel silver (alpaca), a highly resistant mixture of metals, including copper, nickel, and zinc. Used for centuries to imitate sterling silver, nickel silver is a versatile, flexible, yet very strong metal that does not rust. The metalwork known as filigree is particularly beautiful when paired with gems and semiprecious stones from all over the world. Panda uses the spiral forms appearing in Maya glyphs and sculptures to symbolize the initial beginning.

black sea is the artist and seamstress who creates our Textile Arts. Before handsewing a design, she deconstructs clothing, shoes, belts, bags, and jewelry for those funky details to make each piece unique. She has a keen eye for pattern and color, combining often boldly mismatched swatches of material into wearable, utilitarian art. As often as possible, black sea uses natural fabrics and materials, including buttons, shells, seeds, and beads. She works and administers SeeknSea from New York City.
