Somer Keen's Profile

About

SEWSOMER is a collaborative effort between a dynamic mother and daughter relationship. Somer and her mother, Brenda, operate from a duplex log cabin they spent two years building together on Boone Lake in Tennessee.

Brenda began her business to provide a service for the "hard to fit"; the big, tall, short and small. Sewsomer customers say they feel limited in big box retail stores finding clothing that fits properly, compliments their figure, and suite their individual and expressive tastes.

Brenda has been sewing over nearly 50 years, since she was 12 years old. She completed fashion design school in 1975, taught in a sewing factory, and manufactured her own line of knit wear and fleece jackets throughout the 1980's and 1990's. She also served as the alteration specialist in 2 bridal salons for 10 years. During most of her career, she operated an alteration…

During most of her career, she operated an alteration shop from her home while raising two children.

Somer, her daughter, has been sewing since she was little too, first designing for her Barbie doll. She joined the military in 2000 and after several deployments and years training away from home, she moved back to Kingsport, TN to live and work close to her mother. She appreciated having a stay at home mom as a child and wants the same for her child. Somer began sewing for herself in 2005. After a few years of making custom items for friends, she found an outlet for her work at local music festivals. Brenda and Somer vended several events a year until Somer's son was born. Their future plans include expanding their web based business with more presence online focusing on video tutorials and pattern assembly.

Their goal is to create unique designs with top quality construction that are reasonably priced, comfortable, durable, and functional with easy care instructions. They take advantage of local thrift shops, discounted fabrics, barter when available, and local donations to reduce material costs and pass the savings along to you.

Most importantly they want Sewsomer patrons to FEEL good and look good when they wear their fashions. Read the customer reviews and you will see that they are a huge success!!

Somer and Brenda are also on Etsy under the username cbrendasew. This shop was opened for Brenda's vintage items but currently has no inventory.
