Wood working is in my blood, at a very young age I remember sitting on the floor of my grandfather’s shop in a pile of wood shavings playing with the curls of wood. The aroma of fresh cut wood is still a big part of my life.

When I turned eight I was allowed to use the hand tools in the shop. At that age turning 2 by 4’s into boats with a hand plane excited me. Thinking back those boats turned out to be my first commissioned sales. My friends all wanted one of the boats for themselves, so I did a little horse trading.

About

Wood working is in my blood, at a very young age I remember sitting on the floor of my grandfather’s shop in a pile of wood shavings playing with the curls of wood. The aroma of fresh cut wood is still a big part of my life.

When I turned eight I was allowed to use the hand tools in the shop. At that age turning 2 by 4’s into boats with a hand plane excited me. Thinking back those boats turned out to be my first commissioned sales. My friends all wanted one of the boats for themselves, so I did a little horse trading.

My next wood working memories come from middle school wood shop. There was a half turned walnut bowl on the wood rack. The shop teacher gave me a price for the wood, it cost too much for me to buy and turn. Mom and I were living in the projects at the time and money was tight, I could only spend what I made. That brings me to my second commissioned sale, a friend ask me to make a book case. I made the book case and used the money I made to buy the walnut bowl. The finished bowl became a Christmas present and I knew some day I was going to get a lath and turn.

Fifty years later I am retired, I have a shop full of tools and two lathes. My dream of turning has come true.
