Rachel Howe's Profile

About

Rachel Howe makes functional ceramics under the name Small Spells. Drawing on her previous life as a fine artist, she explores patterns and graphic designs through the glazing process. Her work includes planters, bowls, cups and mugs, sometimes created to be sold as pairs or sets. She frequently experiments with complementary opposites, creating groups of pieces with reversed colors and textures. Using wax and underglaze in combination with glazes to layer colors and shapes, she brings elements from painting and textile design to each ceramic piece.

Rachel believes that ceramics for the home should be both beautiful and accessible. Her work is carried by Steven Alan, LEIF, and other independently run shops across the U.S. She is based in Brooklyn, NY.
