Welcome to California Chic and Sexy Jewelry!

I started my business in January 2010 while attending Graduate School at Northwestern University in Chicago; in the midst of writing hundreds of pages in an extremely intelligent and competitive environment, I very suddenly became ill with an undiagnosable autoimmune disorder that for the first time in my life made me sit down and take a deep breath. I've always been a big fan of beautiful, shiny gemstones, and creating jewelry was something I had loved my entire life, so with the urging of my friends and months after I had "opened" my empty Etsy shop, I finally decided to sit on my butt and design design design, listing 20 items and beginning my new relationship with being a jewelry artisan!

I recently graduated with my MFA (yay!), and I've now returned home to California, the source for much of my artistic inspiration!

Jewelry, for me, has been a return to finding something that I enjoy purely for enjoyment, and it's funny how that has turned into the most successful venture I've had thus far in my life. It's been my outlet and release, the thing I can turn to when I'm having a rough day that will instantly bring beauty into my life. Being a writer is my passion, but it's a very love/hate relationship - I write and it's so hard to get someone to hear what I have to say! In a sense, my Jewelry is another expression of those sentiments, perhaps a chip off of my heart and soul... I really do hope that you enjoy browsing through my shop and that my pieces bring a tiny bit of joy to your day!

--My Design Inspiration--

So much of my design comes from my love of the Southwest United States, a place closely tied to both Mexican and Native American Cultures, whose colorful heritage and traditions inhabit many of my designs. I've always had this unexplained fascination with the West, the idea of heading into an unknown territory filled with vast landscapes of indescribable beauty. Being from Southern California, I have been fortunate to take several trips throughout Arizona and New Mexico, places that heavily influence my design aesthetic - How can the beauty of the sun setting over the Grand Canyon not stir intense artistic passion? Photos from these trips still greatly inspire me!

Turquoise in particular is probably my favorite stone (except for diamonds, of course, dahling); there's something mysterious and magical about its rich blue color. And what's not to love about Pyrite? Who cares if it's 'fool's gold'?! It's shiny, bright, and gorgeous!

All of my pieces are hand-made by me and I never export my designs and have other people make them. Every piece is individual and at this point many of my items are one-of-a-kind. Enjoy and please feel free to email or message me with any questions!

Always,
Sonja

I have a wonderful rescue Kitty named Oliver whom I found roaming the streets of LA over three years ago. Unfortunately he was almost immediately diagnosed with Lymphoma, but has been doing very well with his meds! If you are interested in knowing more about Ollie's story or know someone going through the same thing, check out his page at the Feline Lymphoma Caregivers guide! I know what it's like to feel lost and helpless when your pet is diagnosed with a serious ailment, and searched the web for resources in the fight against this disease! I hope this helps anyone out there who's in a similar situation! http://www.felinelymphomacaregivers.org/OliverSonja2009.html

Update: My baby Oliver passed away recently and finally succumbed to his Lymphoma. He was in remission for nearly 3 years, and was the best kitty friend I could have every asked for. Please consider adopting your next pet from a shelter. Every pet deserves a loving home, and if you have the ability to rescue one who is set to be euthanized, all the better!

I'm also an AmeriCorps VISTA alumni (2 years served in LA!!!) and am always interested in ways with which art and education can help in the fight against poverty!
