Ruth Jensen's Profile

About

Hi! I'm Ruth Jensen, and I'm enthralled by wire. It's perfect for revealing the extraordinary beauty and transience of "ordinary" things. I make each sculpture one twist at a time, without patterns or molds, using bazillions of pieces of straight wire. I "see" the shape I want, and make the wires come together in that shape, like putting a puzzle together. (I love puzzles.) My pieces are meant to intrigue and delight you. I'm on Facebook at

For those who like to know such things: I live with my fabulous husband on an inspirational marsh, and try to keep up with my three adult sons (without interfering, of course!) The name Sparkflight comes from the business started by another son who died at the age of 24 in 2002...Some things you never get used to.

About the Wire:

I love the transparency and fluidity of wire. Wire 3D is there, and not there - your eyes have to solve a puzzle to see it! My artistic goal is always to reveal and share the beauty, delight, and humor of life.

All my sculptures are created by twisting individual lengths of wire together until the piece looks like what I see in my head. No solder, no molds, no preformed mesh, just hours of twisting.

My jewelry is made to be strikingly beautiful, to adorn not only yourself, but also your walls or anywhere you choose to hang it. Each of my creations is an original; I spend many hours sketching and trying out ideas.

Once a design captures me, I reach for materials. Most of my copper works begin with stripping old electrical wires or cables, then shaping, hammering, twisting, wrapping, filing, and muttering under my breath while coaxing and forcing the metal to do my will.

When I am satisfied with the look of a piece, I finish the jewelry with antiquing and/or multiple coats of a protective finish by Everbrite; the sculptures are almost always left naked.

Yes, I love commissions.
