This is my song, my labor of love, my business. A love of beautiful clothes and wanting to create them, began very early. My aunt, happened to be an excellent seamstress. She made beautiful clothes for herself and her 2 sisters, one of whom was my mother. They were always in these beautiful get-ups. In the former soviet union where there wasn't much fashion or access, they looked like they walked off the runway. My aunt traveled a lot, referred to magazines and created beautiful clothes that no one else had or could get at the time. It was so inspiring. Then at age 10 I got my own special outfit... heaven!

Not realizing then that designing clothes could be a possibility...all I wanted was a beautiful wardrobe to play dress up every day ;-)

I studied fashion design in Los Angeles, honing my technical skills, one of my instructors had worked for the late-great Adrien* (see old hollywood films)
Then moved to New York city to attend FIT, where I won the critics award for my final garment. I had wonderfully inspiring instructors and dreamed of creating my own line.
> 'kaj.ani' - means 'brave ani' in Armenian and was a childhood nickname.
Discovered the most beautiful fabrics on a business trip to Paris...thus began the process of creating kaj.ani - it all starts with fabrics. A couple of years afterward I won an 'Innovative Designer' contest awarded by *Cotton, Inc. I've had runway shows, etc... but what I love most of all is connecting with the people that love & wear the stuff I make.

I've been designing for close to 12 years - this is my LOVE & passion*
I often wear pieces I made 10 years ago, and they look & feel just as exciting now...which is why I always say - the good stuff lasts. "clothes for keeps" is what I like to call them.
I wish to help create and to live in a world that works for all of humanity...while I get to have the privilege of creating beautiful things that make you feel good about wearing/having them ;-) After years in New York, I'm now back in Los Angeles, and just started 'the Speak Easy' ... it's small & it's new & I love it.
My hear sings when I see someone enjoying what I've made.
When friends and clients tell me how much they love wearing a certain piece & how they good they feel wearing it... it makes me truly happy.

Here are some thoughts...
I feel that clothes should last. They should be beautiful, practical and not overly complicated. I love timeless pieces that feel new...I love to mix it up!
We should all feel GOOD in what we wear, and we should feel like ourselves, not like advertisements for trends or brands.
I believe in cultivating personal style over chasing fashion trends.
I believe Local Small business is the backbone of a healthy economy.
I believe Quality helps to create more sustainability, as it withstands the test of time and because it enables less consumption and more thought.
I believe items such as clothing and accessories should be enjoyed for a long time.
Everything old is new again and cherished items should be cared for.
Everything we create is a labor of LOVE and I truly hope you enjoy them.
