I have always been interested in the creation of small universes. In my work I explore themes of myth, space and time. Old maps and celestial charts are important references. I search for and integrate found objects that are evocative of a particular time or place into many of the works. I am drawn to rich materials: gold leaf, glass, beads, mosaic tiles, beautiful papers, embroidered fabrics -- I am always looking. An important influence on my work has been the time I have spent in Europe, particularly in the British Isles and the many summers spent in Florence, Italy. The countless photos I have taken there over the years serve as important source material. Recently I have become interested in postage stamps as small and beautiful metaphors of travel through time and space, and have been integrating these images into my smaller works.
Biography
I received a B.F.A. in painting from Miami University, and an M.A. in Art History/ Librarianship from the University of Michigan. I worked as an Art Conservator in Cincinnati, Ohio where I was involved in the restoration of many of the major churches and public buildings in the area, in particular the restoration of the Frank Duveneck murals in the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Kentucky. Most recently I worked in the studio as a paintings conservator, restoring American and European easel paintings and antique portrait miniatures. I was also involved for several years in running my own gallery in the Main Street Art District in Cincinnati. My work has been shown in Chicago and in the Cincinnati area. In May, 2011 I relocated to Asheville and am enjoying being able to devote myself full time to my own work.
