I (Rob Caldwell) was in Ukraine, serving an LDS mission. As a missionary, I was wearing a tie every day. As this was the main part of my wardrobe that changed on a daily basis, I started to get bored of the original ties that I brought with me. So, I started to buy neckties from the local bazaar in the city where I was serving at the time.
The members of the Church in that area started to notice all my new ties.
On my last day in Ukraine, some of the members were very kind and met me at the train station to send me off on my way back home.
A few brought presents.
One gift that was given to me was a paper tie with the Ukrainian colors on the front and well wishes written on the back from all the members in that area. What a great idea!
From that gift came the idea to start Statesman Ties and create "A Tie That Means Something."
