When I was a little girl, I used to stand in my mother's closet and admire all the beautiful clothes. The vivid colors and rich textures of silks and lames filled me with wonder. My mother loved and wore all her clothes. A portion of my childhood was spent in Japan and my mother had a dressmaker. Sometimes she would take me with her for fittings. We would get up early and ride the train to the dressmaker. I always loved this adventure, mostly because all the trains were different colors - blue, green, yellow, orange and my very favorite, pink! I loved the clothes too, not just because my mother looked so beautiful in them, but because they were inherently wondrous creations. I knew the lady who made them and somehow that made them even more special. It was my earliest experience with hand made and the direct link to the hand that made them.
