The first time I saw a gourd light was in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. I was so enamored with the lights that I had to have one, even if that meant carrying it through an eight hour flight. That was five years ago and it has been hanging in my entry ever since.
I knew nothing about gourds when I bought my light but several years later decided to do a little research. I was fascinated with the history of gourds and modern day uses as an art medium. I decided to put my artistic side to work and try my luck at making my own gourd light.
As I did my homework on gourds in the art community I found many exceptional examples of gourd art but was surprised to find very few examples of lamps crafted from the unique material. So I dove in head first and came up with my own style and technique. With each creation I strive to achieve uniqueness and while you may find similar themes throughout my work, each light casts its own distinct projection, a fingerprint, if you will. It is in those moments after finishing a new project and the light is turned on that I find joy. When the light dances across the ceiling and slips down the dim walls I am reminded of the awe and wonder that struck me that night in the Riviera Maya. I hope that you too may experience the same passion for these beautiful lights as I do.
