About

Hi! My name is Kate Thorne, I have been designing and making clothes for over ten years. Growing up in North Devon under the influence of hippy parents I was introduced to the realms of faerie at a young age. My father would weave tales of the magical wee folk that he had encountered whiles out exploring the enchanting west county woods and moorlands. Faeries where a very important part of my youth and I was soon creating stories of my own about the various supernatural beings that tended the vegetable patch and the wise pixies that lived in the old oak tree at the bottom of the lane. At night I would lull my brother to sleep with songs and tales of our faerie friends and their exciting adventures.

From these roots began my fascination with all things creative. I developed a keen interest in drawing, painting, story telling, singing, creating faerie landscapes from my Dad's…

About

I developed a keen interest in drawing, painting, story telling, singing, creating faerie landscapes from my Dad's left over wood carvings, growing vegetables in my own little plot and making clothes for my dollies and teddy bears from scraps of fabric left over from my mums sewing kit.

I struggled in an academic setting and was often reported to be 'away with the faeries.' Thankfully the school I attended was small and had country values. My teachers encouraged my creative flare, giving me an easel and the freedom to paint. I am very
grateful for these early encouragements as they have allowed me to believe in my dreams and not be afraid to follow them.

In time I found myself grown and moving to London in pursuit of an acting career. Alas, my faerie friends were soon forgotten and left behind as I was drawn into the modernity of city life. Shopping and clubbing became my new friends, as I lost my way and rejected my country upbringing. After a few years of burning the candle at both ends, I grew bored of the empty reward of city living and moved to West Yorkshire to begin a new life studying Fashion at Bretton Hall aka The Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Being back in the countryside re-kindled my love of nature and reminded me of my long forgotten youth. Anon my creative flare returned and so began the first thoughts of running my own clothing label.

Following six magical months travelling around India and Nepal I returned to the UK with my first collection of technodolly designs! My partner Bez and I began selling the collection at small festivals and to alternative markets around the UK. We learnt a great deal in a short space of time. The natural progression was to start selling on the Internet. That was when I met Jane Turford from Alienskin Clothing. She had a wonderful website selling her own alternative designs and we clicked instantly. She offered to host my designs on her site and the rest is history. It has been ten years since that first meeting. Jane and I continue to work together and now both our clothing collections extend from faerie clothing and cross the bridge through to gothic and cyber wear. You can find us and many other fantastic designs at www.alienskin.co.uk

After all these years I have come back to my true self, my love of creating and all things faerie! I stayed in West Yorkshire after falling in love with my wonderful partner Bez and the surrounding Pennine country-side. We now live in a seventeenth century cottage surrounded by meadows, with a view over the village & Yew Tree Mills - one of few fabric mills that are still in operation in this once thriving industrial community.

Thank you for taking the time to read about my adventure, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I do :) If you have read this and feel inspired to start your own business, please feel free to contact me for any advice at technodolly23 [!at] yahoo.co.uk
