The first thing I ever made with a sewing machine was an Anne of Green Gables Halloween costume with my grandmother when I was 11. The first thing I ever made with a sewing machine was an Anne of Green Gables Halloween costume with my grandmother when I was 11. I remember picking out a hunter green calico (a terrible choice in retrospect) and a cream colored lace trim. I agonized over the perfect puffed sleeve pattern. Dressed in my homespun garment, I proudly walked the neighborhood, eager to see which of my neighbors was literary enough to guess who I had dressed as. Unfortunately, my brown hair made me look more like Laura Ingalls Wilder than Anne Shirley.

Since then, my sewing has become more practical in nature. I leave the literary references to my day job, teaching English at a Christian high school. Much of my crafting inspiration these days comes from my baby girl. I dream up onesies and burpcloths and taggies instead of puffed sleeve confections. I also enjoy making fun aprons and other decorative items for my home. I love fabric stores and salivate at the sight of a colorful bolt of cotton.

So, instead of creating costumes of imaginative fancy, I have taken to etsy to bring a little of that panache to everyday life. This time I promise to stay away from the hunter green calico!
