About

Niamh I.O'Connor - thats me! I'm an Encaustic NUT, just cant get enough of that wax medium! I work from my often messy Garden Studio in County Monaghan here in Ireland, lovingly called “This Little Studio” !

I have spent the last 6 or more years learning all I can about Encaustic (lifelong learning I think) and where I have mastered many of the techniques I am now trying to call out my inner voice and find my own narrative, many of the works here are the smaller versions of that story.....

"Encaustic is the process of painting and mark making with pigmented wax, an ancient medium, Encaustic was the paint of choice used thousands of years ago to paint the "mummy portraits" in Egypt, prior to the discovery of, and alongside, the use of... Tempera and oils, it was a difficult process without the use of electricity- this medium fell out of favor for various reasons and was replaced by these other more commonly known mediums.

For the last number of decades Encaustic has been undergoing a revival in popularity, since the discovery of electricity making the process remarkably easier and due to the success in the mid 1950's - early 1960’s when the medium was reintroduced to the main stream by contemporary artist “Jasper Johns”amongst others.

It’s a fascinating medium, emotive, sculptural, textural and aglow with beautiful light that give each piece an ethereal effect unmatched by other paint medium. Paintings to touch, smell, sensory pictures that evoke emotion".

I currently run workshops on demand throughout Ireland and am available for demonstrations and training sessions by appointment. You can contact for training and/or commissions by email at: thislittlestudio [!at] eircom.net. x N.
