My garage has always had enough room for everything except a car, and now it's become a fused glass studio. What started out as a retirement hobby that might be a fun expression of creativity, has become a joy. It seems the possibilities of glass are endless.
I begin with a sheet of beautifully colored glass or finely ground glass called "frit". From there, my imagination takes over. I cut, grind, mix and shape the glass to suit my current vision. Then the glass is smoothed in the kiln, fusing layers of glass together or molding frit to an attractive shape. Often this goes to 1450 degrees and may take 10 or more hours to heat up and anneal (cool slowly to give strength). Next, I check for any last minute changes, corrections or grinding off any rough spots. Then back into the kiln to smooth out again. When I add cast pieces to a fused piece, another firing or two is required…
