Cathy Khoury's Profile

About

My name is Cathy and I live in the beautiful Ottawa, our Nation's Capital. I moved here from Montreal almost 4 years ago to study for my Master's degree in Development Communication. The first semester I got here, I met my wonderful boyfriend and have made myself a good life here. After a few years of making jewelry as a hobby, I decided to combine my interest in development with my passion for crafting, making Touch Jewelry what it is today - wanting it to be more than a simple jewelry business.

Perhaps it was because of my very early years in Africa, but I always felt like I should be helping those out of my reach, and Africa had a special place in my heart. The satisfaction that came from my various volunteering experiences (In Their Shoes Canada, CARE Canada, UNICEF Canada, etc.) helped me learn a lot about society, conflict and the world at large and from these experiences, I understood…

The satisfaction that came from my various volunteering experiences (In Their Shoes Canada, CARE Canada, UNICEF Canada, etc.) helped me learn a lot about society, conflict and the world at large and from these experiences, I understood that more needed to be done.

So, with headquarters in Montreal, and a workshop in Ottawa, Touch Jewelry is a home-based handcrafted jewelry business inspired by everyday women. With my partner in crime Hoda Lutfi, I aspire to make Touch Jewelry a business that mainly uses fairly traded beads - building empowerment around the world. As such, our products feature various beads from across the globe, in one-way or another helping local businesses and micro-businesses in various developing countries. In the long term, we hope to only be working with fairly traded beads.

With a first partnership with the Women of Kireka (WoK), We aim to help their initiative through micro-financing by purchasing their paper beads, helping them establish their local business in Kampala, Uganda. As such, Touch Jewelry will create unique pieces that reflect a message of empowerment. With the support of Project Diaspora, WoK aims to become an independent business. In turn, Touch Jewelry hopes to help WoK gain the knowledge they need to create a successful business through a partnership.

With this new and exciting vision in mind, Touch Jewelry aspires to connect women and artisans in the common goal of human touch and cooperation. By reaching out our hearts and minds through art and craft, we hope to do our part to unite all people in one common Touch, one human horizon.

We're always on the lookout for new bead suppliers! Drop us a message and we'll be happy to chat with you!
