About

my name is donna, a mother of two small beauties, and i have a deep love of sewing passed down by my mother. however, unlike my mom, i sew entirely by hand. i use only scissors, thread, thimble, a small school ruler, and a piece of white chalk when i need to mark something. i don't use rotary cutters or mats or a sewing machine, or anything rather modern, and certainly not an embroidery machine. i like to think i'm making things in the primitive fashion, although my fabrics are new. though it's entirely more time consuming, i love the process. being hand sewn, not all stitches are completely alike, but i do try to make them small, and everything i sew will hold up quite well, since i ere on the side of durability and do not skimp on my stitches.

my name is donna, a mother of two small beauties, and i have a deep love of sewing passed down by my mother. however, unlike my mom, i sew entirely by hand. i use only scissors, thread, thimble, a small school ruler, and a piece of white chalk when i need to mark something. i don't use rotary cutters or mats or a sewing machine, or anything rather modern, and certainly not an embroidery machine. i like to think i'm making things in the primitive fashion, although my fabrics are new. though it's entirely more time consuming, i love the process. being hand sewn, not all stitches are completely alike, but i do try to make them small, and everything i sew will hold up quite well, since i ere on the side of durability and do not skimp on my stitches.

i've always have a love of anything well-used, worn, and antique. for as long as i can remember, i have collected and admired old things. some of the things i admire may have little or no value on the established antiques market, since i love them only for their beauty and the sense of who they may have belonged to. some of my favorite things are antique fabric, antique silver baby cups that have been beaten about and loved and show that a real baby actually used it, antique photos of people, usually children, not remotely related to me (which boggles my mother), and antique quilts that are sometimes beautiful and sometimes not. with most antique quilts, you will find hand stitches quite often, and it makes you pause and wonder what, if any, solace this stitching brought to the sewer. i read something some years back on quilting that quoted a pioneer woman's diary saying: "i made quilts as fast as i could to keep my family warm, and as pretty as i could to keep my heart from breaking." now, i can't claim to be a pioneer or know those hardships, but i can respect the sentiment. for about 7 years i’ve had advanced COPD, which is caused by "they know not what", although I've looked high and low and even traveled thousands of scary miles twice and had the top portion of both lungs removed, while raising two daughters. It, unfortunately, has caused me to spend a lot of time idle, and i hate being idle! so if you ask yourself “who on earth would have time to hand-sew all that?”, there’s the answer.

My time for sewing may soon be over since I've not felt so inclined for a while now, but I dearly hope my creative muse will lead me to something new. I very much doubt it will be painting or drawing, since I cant draw a stick, and my 9-year old Sydney can draw realistic people! I do greatly appreciate art in any form, though. I think it may be God's way of allowing each person to feel joy, peace, or even exercise demons and reach out. I wish every person could find their art and a medium to share it with like minds. Etsy is such a wonderful tool for that. Although it's primary function is a place to buy and sell, it also offers creative ideas and communication with other likeminded people, perhaps being a seed to future friendships. I have been homebound for so long, that while other women were at the mall, I have traveled the vast corridors of Etsy many lonely times and found comfort, inspiration, ideas, and of course things to buy.

Sorry I'm so long-winded. Perhaps a blog is in my future?

I hope God thoroughly blesses your lives as much as he has blessed mine.
