Aloha,

My name is Stephanie, and I am a fabric artist, sewing addict, and writer living on the rainy side of the Big Island of Hawaii. I began sewing as a creative change of pace from all the wordy work I do on the computer, and now make quilted home décor and wall art for people who love contemporary designer fabrics and bright colors.

I named my business “Venus de Hilo” because I love all things Venusian (beauty, luxury, femininity, pink!) … and because, as a former Art History major, I couldn’t resist the silly pun on a famous classical work of art. The “Venus de Hilo” style is beautiful and stylish and quirky, all at the same time.

Some of my fondest early memories are of visiting my grandmother in a small village on the coast of Maine. She was a painter and quiltmaker, and every bed in her home boasted a beautiful handmade quilt. The colors and patterns intrigued me, and I Ioved watching “Nanny” wiggle her nimble needle through a row of running stitch as she pieced another quilt by hand. I now live a long way from Maine, and although my quilts are far less traditional than the ones I loved to snuggle under at my grandmother’s house, I take great delight in carrying on this family tradition.

As a quiltmaker my greatest pleasure comes from combining beautiful fabrics into unique designs that celebrate the interplay of color, line, and texture. I opened the Venus de Hilo Etsy shop in the spring of 2012 to share these creations with you. Also, on a practical level, there’s a limit to how many quilts a Hawaiian home can absorb, and I don't plan to stop sewing anytime soon!

Every item in my shop is one-of-a-kind, created in my home sewing studio. I don’t use other designers’ patterns or rely on pre-cut fabric sets, preferring to mix and match prints and colors from various designers and styles as I follow wherever inspiration takes me. Even when I make multiples of a design (some pillow-covers, for example, or a simple baby quilt), each one is created from different fabrics in unique combinations.
