About

I've been an English teacher in Scotland for eleven years and have always been a keen crafter. The obsession began with fabric: I love it. I learned to use a sewing machine at eleven and made a pair of trousers. Since then, I've made toys, handbags and soft furnishings. I did courses at college to consolidate what I knew, and to gain confidence in putting in zips! During this time, I started to make appliques using beads and buttons and this began a second love.

For anyone who makes jewellery, you'll know how difficult it is to see pretty beads and not buy them! This, coupled with my love of bright, unusual jewellery, began a new hobby. I've been making jewellery for a few years now and have sold some to friends and family.

After the birth of my second son in October, I decided that I'd like to work more from home, and so I am embarking on 'Vintuous', which-bizarrely-came to me in a dream! Honestly!

I wanted, initially, to make 'Vintage-style' accessories (hats/aprons/stoles) and jewellery from reclaimed buttons and beads-hence the mix of 'Vintage' and 'Virtuous'. That's my aim!

Since beginning my Etsy shop, I've been working on a series of unusual bookmarks, which came from a conversation I had with my husband, where we laughed at the literal image of the old saying, "A Nose Stuck in a Book". What would a disembodied nose look like, literally sticking out of a book...? It made us laugh, anyway. It got me thinking and making. These bookmarks have gone through many permutations, but have resulted in something I'm proud of. The noses are made of a very-lighweight clay, all moulded by hand and then varnished. I have made cute accessories, like glasses and nose rings. I've also found a brilliant use for my embroidery machine: I can make handkerchiefs for the noses with a personalised message. (The idea of adding a handkerchief to the nose bookmark, also made us laugh!) I am constantly coming up with more and more ideas! Watch this space!
