Looking back on my life, I realize that creativity has been a part of my existence since I was born. My mother was an Art Education major and we were always attending local craft fairs and cultural events. I can remember playing hooky from elementary school just so I could spend time with my great-aunt Hazel. She would always sew Barbie doll clothes for me by hand when I visited.
As I grew older, I never seemed to quite fit in with my peers. I always felt out of place because I wanted to march to my own beat.
I was always expressing myself creatively through poems and short stories. I tried sewing for the first time right after I graduated from high school (many moons ago). I thought that I could learn on my own. I was extremely discouraged by my first project, a pair of Bermuda shorts that didn't turn out the way I wanted (okay, so I sewed the legs together and couldn't even try them on!) Slowly but surely, I turned my back on my creativity in order to conform to others expectations. I always knew something was missing in my life.
Over the years, my journey through life has seemed to take a U-turn back to where I started. I truly believe that creating something as precious and perfect as my first born kick- started my creative endeavors. At the time my daughter was born, I enjoyed crocheting scarves; however, I wasn’t quite satisfied. I have been a stay at home mom for the past four years and have been given the opportunity to pick up the wonderful craft of sewing again. I wish that I wouldn't have given up so easily because sewing is my passion.
Sewing soothes my soul. Choosing different fabric color combinations gets me just as excited as when I was a little girl receiving new hand sewn Barbie doll clothes.
