Machel Spence's Profile

About

I majored in Zoology in college so not only do I have an artistic connection to my subjects but a point of view from biology as well which makes my work extra exciting to observe and capture through my lens. I am out in the woods on average about 3 hours a day 365 days a year searching for mushrooms and slime mold to photograph...it is my passion and it's where I love to be! The smell of the forest is the best smell in the world and I have honed my skills of finding fungi using all of my senses (I even smell them before I find them now). I live in Seattle Washington with my husband and daughter, and can frequently be seen photographing fungi in low-light environments with my lower torso sticking out of a thicket. My love for mushrooms and slime-mold is reflected in every photograph I take. I am really horrible at following directions or reading manuals so I completely learned how to use my camera just by pushing random buttons and finally figuring it all out (took me many years!) All of my photographs are SOOC (straight out of camera) and while I do not disagree with other photographer's using PS & other software to change their images I am a bit of a purist. I like to see the photograph exactly as I took it, the most I ever do is crop to a square.

I use an Olympus E-510 10mp camera with a 50mm macro lens most of the time, sometimes I switch my lens out to a zoom but it's always Olympus...:)
