I paint in the classical tradition with oils, with many thin layers of paint, allowing each layer to dry before starting the next. I refine the colors, shapes, values, and edges with each pass, slowly bringing the subject into focus. I usually choose muted, earthy colors for my backgrounds, saving the bright, saturated color for the subject. When the painting feels done but is still a little flat, I glaze the painting with several thin, transparent layers of various colors. It's a slow process, because each layer must dry thoroughly before the next is laid down, but the technique brings depth, luminosity and atmosphere to a painting. This is what really brings the painting to life.
