Annie Frykholm's Profile

About

Hello, my name is Annie, and I am the creator of Whim Wham Woolens and Woods, (whim-wham meaning a quaint, decorative object). I live outside of Breckenridge, Colorado, and work in a small home studio that borders the White River National Forest with the Ten Mile range out our back door. When I am not in my studio, I usually can be found spending time with my family, hiking or woodburning artwork onto our custom serving trays, which is my other preferred medium.

Finding unique gifts or collectibles that are hand crafted and have the potential to become family heirlooms has always been a challenge for me. Items that harken back to a previous era when things were constructed with care for long lasting, sentimental value. Items that were made with love and skill and that were not mass produced commercially and found in department stores with generic labels. I deeply value those heirloom…

I deeply value those heirloom possessions that were my great grandmother's; hand tatted fine linens, or beautifully embroidered pillow cases with delicate crocheted lace. If only I could offer such treasures to those whom I love... well, these qualities were firmly in mind when I felted my first pillow and now, framed felted wall art. Inspired by my niece, Louisa, by wet felting that she was doing, I researched the process of felting by hand. After discovering the technique of needle felting, and with some experimentation, I was smitten! Each of my pillows and framed feltings is hand felted exclusively by me and whimsically designed to illicit a sense of joy and nostalgia to the beholder.

Why Art???

Because the creative process is such a joy! God has hardwired me with an artist's filter, to notice and be inspired by the beauty of His creation. Colors and textures in nature and flowers tend to inspire me the most.

It's no coincidence that nature inspires me, since I have lived in two of the most scenic regions of North America; born and raised in the lush, mountainous Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, right on Puget Sound, and for the last 33 years, in the heart of the Colorado Rockies. Living in the abundance of this beauty has influenced me significantly as an artist.
Through the last several years, my art has transitioned from designing cottage gardens, to working with clay, to sewing, to brief encounters with oils, watercolors, knitting and beading, and now to longer stays with wood burned etchings, and needle felting.

In the in-between times, I have been a stay at home mother, raising 3 children, (two college graduates and one still in college), and have joyfully run the gamut for craft/art projects! I have taken a few undergraduate art classes and workshops to help me develop my skills, but am mostly self taught.

In addition, for the last 33 years, I have been working with my husband, Jon, developing and managing a furniture manufacturing company that designs and builds classically styled western and mountain lodge furniture. I have designed art for the last 12 years, that we have incorporated into our furniture line as well. We are also pursuing a new dream; building authentic, vintage mountain cabins in Twin Lakes, CO, and outfitting them with a new primitive furniture line, The Cabin Collection.

My other current personal dream is being realized with the creation of my studio on Etsy and the ability to engage in art, in community, with others who are like- minded!
