Julie Cavender's Profile
I'm a self-taught potter and clay artist after receiving a potter's wheel, a bag of clay and a how-to book for Christmas in 1992 while recovering from a near-fatal car accident. Clay was both physical and emotional therapy. The willow tree marking on all my creations symbolizes the willow tree planted as a memorial for the unborn son I lost. ♥ ♥
Throwing on an electric wheel, I let the clay tell me what it wants to do. From the very first time I touched the clay, it felt like something I was meant to do. I'm inspired by the colors and textures in nature and often use natural materials to obtain the interesting surfaces on my pots.
Handbuilt work is done with a slab roller or rolling pin and then slumped into or draped over some kind of form. My favorite is an old wicker basket. I also use a collection of old trays, glass dishes or jars…
