Hello, my name is David Vollmer. I learned to knit with yarn as a child growing up in rural Idaho as a way to keep busy during the long cold Idaho winters. Several years ago I began experimenting with wire knitting, after being inspired by an artist who created crocheted wire textiles. I struggled for months trying to create anything that had a consistent gauge and stitch quality, which eventually led me to developing my “off the needle” technique to wire knitting.

I have really come to enjoy working with wire as my medium of choice. Being pliable yet retaining form, knitted wire as a medium has allowed me the freedom to create shapes and designs that would be impossible with other materials. I enjoy using a technique that is usually associated with soft and draping constructions and, instead, creating more ridged architectural forms.

My artwork has been included in several museum group exhibitions, including shows at the Dairy Barn Art Center in Athens, OH and the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft in Houston, TX. Additionally, my work has been available at the Asher Gallery, Houston, TX; the Local Color Gallery, Galveston, TX and the Halcyon Contemporary Art Gallery, Terre Haute, IN.
