I am Jakoba Havinga, creator of one-of-a-kind lights called Levend Lichtje. (I'm Dutch. It means 'Small Living Light.')
When I was searching for a good night light for my newborn son, nothing I found was what I was looking for. Most lights were far too bright, too modern or too cutesy. I decided I would make one myself and set out to make a night light like no other. It should look as if it came straight out of nature. I managed to make that light, and it was a night light that changed my life. Making sculptures like this first one became my job. It combines all my interests: my art study, nature, bioluminescence, electronics, my never stopping stream of new ideas, and my love for figuring out new techniques. The list goes on.
That first light is still in use as a night light for my two little boys five years later. My sons have grown accustomed to a mom who describes herself as a 'maker', someone who is constantly battered by new ideas. Fortunately I'm able to actually make most of those too. I'm also a wife of a pianist/philosophy teacher. His patience for my constant urge to create is legendary.
The result of my making-business is two small boys with a rock-solid confidence that mom can repair all their toys. My work desk always has a broken toy car somewhere. I bet you'll see it in the background of my Instagram pictures.
