Alycia D'Avino's Profile

About

My name is Alycia D’Avino, I am a full time artist and business owner with a B.S in Art Education. I learned how to felt while teaching a summer art program at a Waldorf School of Garden City, NY. One of my mentors introduced me to the technique and I fell in love with it and began teaching the process to my students.

That summer was a very tough time for me. It had been more than 3 years since I had graduated and I had yet to find a permanent job within my field. I was struggling with my finances, my health, and to top it off I had just moved. At this time, felting was the only thing that took the stress away. And so I began a felting frenzy…from that frenzy grew YUMMI. A whimsical line of accessories and home decor for unique individuals inspired by my love for color.

As a starving artist I started off with craft shows and quickly found out about Etsy as other vendors at the shows were also sellers on Etsy. Since I began selling on Etsy it has all been up hill! I quit my day job and now operate YUMMI full time. The company is expanding so rapidly. It is proving to be the new wave in fashion. Because the felting process is so time consuming, I am in collaboration with 2 other artists who assist me in the production of my products. Tony and PJ, my associate. My assistants/associates alleviate the pressure by helping me felt wool balls so that I can later assemble them into products such as purses and rugs.

The greatest tip I could give anyone starting out in this business or any business is to THINK POSITIVE! There is one thing I can
guarantee 100%. If you are negative, worried, and do not believe in your own success, you will NOT be successful! I can always tell what kind of mood I am in that day by the amount of sales I make. It never fails every time! To eliminate negativity, or negative thoughts takes practice and dedication and is harder than you may think. Set aside 15 minutes daily to write your goals as a shop owner. Write them as if you have already achieved them! Feel the excitement as you write it. Ex: I am super successful, I make 20
sales a day! Whatever you believe you can achieve!
