About

I am a studio potter in Salt Lake City.

I make functional ware that is modest, intimate and that I hope pays due homage to the earthen materials from which is is constructed. About

I am a studio potter in Salt Lake City.

I make functional ware that is modest, intimate and that I hope pays due homage to the earthen materials from which is is constructed. I spent years learning to make round, symmetrical pots, but I always felt like there was something missing. When I gained the confidence in my work to let the fundamental asperity of ceramic materials show in my finished pieces I found that these were the kinds of pots that best embody my relationship with the craft. At one point I had the attitude that I had to "un-learn" the conventional techniques I had spent so long refining, but I have realized that I can make room for both aesthetics and that my best work comes with a certain sense of tension between the two.

Most of the work I have on Etsy now is more abstract. I especially like mugs, which are distinctly Western, that are informed by the Japanese ceramic traditions. I also do more conventional work and I think I will start listing it on Etsy soon.

All my work is lead-free and dishwasher and microwave safe unless otherwise indicated. I may occasionally list some raku or other non-functional ware, but will label it clearly when I do.
