Color connects us to joy
I called my store Color Connexion because I am fascinated by the ways that colors influence us, how they play with each other, and how their personalities change depending on which colors surround them.
I offer 5 main types of dyed fabric: tone on tone value gradients, ice dyes, color washes, stash packs and fabric manipulations, including shibori and tie dye.
The tonal gradients are light to dark values of a single color. Analogous gradients offer 3 values of colors which are close on the color wheel. These are a safe starting place as results are always harmonious. Both these types of tone on tone fabrics add interest, and work like batik blenders.
They are sold in fat eighth, fat quarter or half yard packs, 21x9", 21x18", 21x36". The base fabric I use is 100% cotton, has s a soft hand, and a thread count of 78x74. It is suitable for hand quilting and embroidery, and machine quilting.
For gradients, please note that I dye in small batches and dye lots can vary. If you let me know at the outset of your project you may need more, I will keep some aside to ensure matching. Dye lots are noted on your invoice.
Color wash gradients merge from one color to another, creating a wonderful variety of secondary mixes in the process. Color wash gradients are dyed on 100% cotton, with a soft hand and a thread count of 78x74, which is suitable for hand quilting and embroidery, as well as machine quilting. These fabrics are available as half yards or fat quarters. Larger sizes can be custom ordered.
Stash packs are unique and unrepeatable offerings of a variety of fabrics around a color theme. These are not intended to match, or to be a gradient. They offer an opportunity to broaden your stash. I have so much fun putting them together to create a great range of shades and textures. While the base fabrics may vary, they are all 1005 cotton and play well together. Stash packs are offered as sets of 10 fat eighths, or 10 fat quarters. There are also occasional offerings of strip sets, and itty bitty packs, ideal for applique.
Fabric manipulations include Arashi shibori which is a pole wrapped method of creating texture on fabric. Each piece is unique and unrepeatable. Given the constraints of the technique, the width is restricted to a half yard, but the length can be up to 3 yards on request, although the pattern and color depth will vary across the fabric.
Ice dyed pieces are also one off offerings. Fabric is laid under ice and dye powder is sprinkled on top of the ice. As the ice melts the dye is carried onto the fabric in flowing patterns. Base fabrics vary, but all are 100% cotton with a thread count of 78x74. Ice dyed pieces are offered as fat quarters and half yards.
All my fabric is dyed with Procion MX dyes. These dyes are vibrant, but also allow for translucent effects. They are superior to fabric paints as they create a chemical bond with the fabric, locking in the color wash after wash. My technique of low water immersion dyeing provides maximum opportunity for the colors to blend in interesting combinations, while also making rich textures on the fabric.
I constantly explore new color experiments, and am happy to work with clients with specific color requests.
My second love after color is fabric, petting it, playing with it and rearranging it. Sometimes I even make things with it...Hand dyed fabrics are wonderful to work with. They blend with commercial fabrics already in your stash. They fuse beautifully as there are no finishes and the color penetrates front and back of the fabric.
