The Long And The, Uh.....Short Of It
Cuando era niño, me encantaba el color. No tenía un solo color favorito, ¡eran TODOS mis favoritos! Honestamente, ¿cómo puede alguien decir que ama el rojo más que el azul o el blanco o el amarillo o el púrpura? Para mí, elegir un color favorito habría sido como una madre eligiendo a qué niño ama más.
Así que cuando era niño, cuando alguien me preguntaba qué quería ser cuando creciera, no lo sabía, solo sabía que quería trabajar con el color. De algún modo. ¡Pero trate de decirle eso a un consejero de carrera de la escuela secundaria! (Eventualmente, opté por estudiar biblioteca y servicios de información).
Trabajé en una biblioteca por un tiempo, pero nunca me encantó. Encontré el trabajo aburrido y tedioso, así que renuncié y comencé a buscar formas de trabajar con color que no implicara pintar todas las habitaciones de mi casa. Otra vez.
Mi tía fue quien me introdujo en las manualidades de papel. Ella siempre ha sido una ávida creadora de tarjetas y me encantaba pasar tiempo con ella en su pequeña sala de manualidades. Miraba a mi alrededor y veía colores en todas partes: azules profundos, rojos ricos, verdes menta, rosas suaves, amarillos vivos, ¡color!
Terminé lanzando mi primera tienda de Etsy, Ivory Leaf Invitations and Stationery, a principios de 2012. Adoro la elaboración de papel y la creación de invitaciones originales y únicas para bodas, bautizos, cumpleaños, despedidas de soltera, etc.
Pero cuanto más trabajaba con papel, más me daba cuenta de que realmente quería crear mis propios papeles con mi propia paleta de colores. Entonces, con el aliento de un querido amigo, compré Photoshop y comencé a crear papeles digitales. Al instante me volví adicto.
Comencé enumerando algunos paquetes de papel digital a través de mi tienda Ivory Leaf, pero cuando se convirtieron en más productos digitales que cualquier otra cosa, decidí que las golosinas digitales necesitaban su propia tienda y su propio espacio.
Encontrar un nombre para la tienda tomó menos de 3 segundos. Era obvio cómo tenía que llamarse: Dashing Shadow Designs. "Dashing" proviene de nuestro perro salchicha rojo en miniatura (Henry) que está siendo constantemente objeto de burlas por ser bajo, y "Shadow" proviene de nuestro querido gato, Shadow, a quien adoptamos de la RSPCA hace más de siete años. Ella se está llevando bien en años y su salud está empezando a declinar, pero ella es mi compañera constante, mi propia pequeña sombra, siguiéndome a donde quiera que vaya.
Así que ahí lo tienes: ¡la historia de Dashing Shadow Designs!
As a child, I loved colour. I didn't have just one favourite colour, they were ALL my favourites! Honestly, how can someone say they love red more than blue or white or yellow or purple! To me, picking a favourite colour would have been like a mother picking which child she loves more.
So as a child, when someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I didn't know - I just knew that I wanted to work with colour. Somehow. But try telling a high school career counsellor that! (Eventually, I opted for studying library and information services.)
I worked in a library for a little while, but I never loved it. I found the work dull and tedious so I quit and began to look for ways to work with colour that didn't involve painting every room of my house. Again.
My aunty was the one who introduced me to paper crafts. She's always been an avid card-maker and I loved to spend time with her in her little craft room. I would look around and see colour everywhere - deep blues, rich reds, minty greens, soft pinks, vivid yellows - colour!
I ended up launching my first Etsy store - Ivory Leaf Invitations and Stationery - in early 2012. I adore paper-crafting and creating original and unique invitations for wedding, christenings, birthdays, bridal showers, etc.
But the more I worked with paper, the more I realized that I really wanted to create my own papers with my own colour palette. So, with the encouragement of a dear friend, I purchased Photoshop and started creating digital papers. I was instantly addicted.
I began by listing some digital paper packs via my Ivory Leaf store but when there became more digital products than anything else, I decided the digital goodies needed their own store and their own space.
Coming up with a name for the store took less than 3 seconds. It was obvious what it had to be called - Dashing Shadow Designs. "Dashing" comes from our miniature red dachshund (Henry) who is being constantly teased for being short, and "Shadow" comes from our beloved cat, Shadow, who we adopted from the RSPCA over seven years ago. She's getting on in years and her health is beginning to decline, but she is my constant companion, my own little shadow, following me around wherever I go.
