My father started cutting and harvesting big leaf Maple trees in Washington state over 20 years ago. It started out as a way to make extra cash during the holidays, which soon turned into a full time job. I remember being younger and going out there and helping him pack out blocks uphill on a hot summer day. Of course it seemed like 90% of the time, it was always uphill to the truck. Once we got back to the shop, he would put them on the bandsaw and cut them into billets. I was tasked with taking the billets and getting the ready to put in the drier. Once they were dried to a specific moisture level, they were ready to be ran through the planner and shipped off to a guitar company.
The billets that I am now selling on Etsy are the billets that either had a small defect or they were slightly too thin for what the guitar companies were looking to purchase. However, the wood still has beautiful figure and is useful for more projects than just creating a guitar.
