Het voelt alsof het gisteren was dat ik de magie van de Tió de Nadal echt begreep. Het was kerstavond en mijn jongste nichtje, pas 2 jaar oud, liep de woonkamer van mijn ouders binnen. Ze was meteen gefascineerd door de lachende boomstam met ogen die haar aanstaarden. En vanaf dat moment werd het alleen maar beter!
Nadat ze haar het beroemde "Cagatió"-liedje had geleerd, zong ze uit volle borst mee en begon ze enthousiast met een stok op de boomstam te slaan. Op dat moment leek ze bezeten te zijn, het was echt hilarisch! Toen gebeurde de magie: Tió poepte cadeautjes. Ze kon het niet geloven.
Ze gilde van vreugde toen ze haar cadeautjes opende en iedereen hielp Tió hun cadeautjes te laten poepen. De nacht veranderde in een wervelwind van gelach, chaos en sluwe pogingen om de stok te grijpen voor een nieuwe kans om meer cadeautjes van Tió te krijgen. Om 3 uur 's nachts besloten we eindelijk dat Tió zijn rust had verdiend en stuurden hem terug naar het bos - tot volgend jaar Kerstmis.
Ik vier Tió de Nadal al sinds ik me kan herinneren, thuis, op school, met vrienden, maar die avond, door de ogen van mijn neef, begreep ik eindelijk de magie. Sindsdien is de Pooping Log het hart van onze familiekerstviering geworden.
Spoel 25 jaar vooruit en mijn man en ik bevinden ons in Chicago, ver van familie maar vastbesloten om de traditie niet te missen. Voor onze eerste Kerstmis in de stad maakten we onze eigen Tió.
Het duurde niet lang voordat iedereen die hem zag verliefd op hem werd. Al snel begonnen vrienden om hun eigen Tió te vragen. We maakten er een paar als cadeau, maar toen begonnen vrienden van vrienden er ook om te vragen. Toen besloten we om onze Etsy-winkel te openen.
Maar daar stopten we niet. Onze missie om de liefde voor Catalaanse feesttradities te verspreiden, blijft groeien. Naast handgemaakte Tió de Nadal bieden we nu ook onze eigen merkkleding en accessoires aan, waarmee we de humor en charme van de Pooping Log vieren. We zijn ook begonnen met het importeren van traditionele caganers: grillige kerststalfiguren die beroemde personages of alledaagse mensen afbeelden in, laten we zeggen, een heel natuurlijke houding: poepen. Deze brutale figuren zijn een geliefd onderdeel van Catalaanse kerststallen en symboliseren nederigheid, menselijkheid en een vleugje humor tijdens de feestdagen.
Tió de Nadal, of The Pooping Log, heeft een speciale plek in ons hart. Het is een traditie die we graag willen behouden en delen, of dat nu in Catalonië, de VS of zelfs Timboektoe is!

It feels like just yesterday that I truly understood the magic of the Tió de Nadal. It was Christmas Eve, and my youngest cousin, only 2 years old, walked into my parents' living room. She was immediately fascinated by the smiling log with eyes staring back at her. And things only got better from there!
After teaching her the famous "Cagatió" song, she sang along with gusto and eagerly started hitting the log with a stick. In that moment, she looked like she’d been possessed—it was absolutely hilarious! Then the magic happened: Tió pooped presents. She couldn’t believe it.
She squealed with joy as she opened her gifts and helped everyone else make Tió poop theirs. The night turned into a whirlwind of laughter, chaos, and sneaky attempts to grab the stick for another chance to coax more gifts from Tió. By 3 a.m., we finally decided Tió had earned his rest and sent him back to the forest—until next Christmas.
I’ve been celebrating Tió de Nadal since I can remember—at home, at school, with friends—but that night, through my cousin’s eyes, I finally understood the magic. Since then, the Pooping Log has become the heart of our family’s Christmas celebration.
Fast forward 25 years, and my husband and I find ourselves in Chicago, far from family but determined not to miss out on the tradition. For our first Christmas in the city, we crafted our own Tió.
It didn’t take long for everyone who saw him to fall in love. Soon, friends started asking for their own Tió. We made a few as gifts, but then friends of friends started requesting them too. That’s when we decided to open our Etsy shop.
But we didn’t stop there. Our mission to spread the love for Catalan holiday traditions continues to grow. In addition to handcrafted Tió de Nadal, we now offer our own branded apparel and accessories—celebrating the humor and charm of the Pooping Log. We’ve also started importing traditional caganers: whimsical nativity figurines depicting famous characters or everyday people in, let’s say, a very natural pose—pooping. These cheeky figures are a beloved part of Catalan nativity scenes, symbolizing humility, humanity, and a touch of humor during the holiday season.
