En 1986, Sloop y Barbara emprendieron una aventura abierta en el Caribe que finalmente los llevó al East End de St. John. Alquilaron una choza en la playa, viajaron a la ciudad y de regreso (casi imposible en este vecindario remoto) y se dedicaron a construir un negocio y una vida juntos en St. John.
Con las 300 camisetas que trajeron de Massachusetts, Sloop y Barbara comenzaron lo que ahora es una línea de moda icónica de St. John: ropa cómoda y colorida pintada a mano en el estilo característico de Sloop. En los primeros días, llevando camisetas con ellos dondequiera que fueran, vendían en el ferry a St. Thomas. Y cuando se quedaron sin mercancía, Sloop y Barbara estaban felices de vender las camisas de sus espaldas.
Casi tres décadas después, la marca Sloop Jones es un elemento básico de St. John, que emplea a varias personas especiales de la isla durante todo el año. Las piezas únicas de ropa y arte mural encarnan lo que tanta gente ama del Caribe: la celebración del color, la impresionante belleza natural, la suave brisa de los vientos alisios, los personajes extravagantes y el ambiente relajado, todas esas cosas que hacen que la vida en la isla sea encantadora.
En julio de 2014, Sloop perdió a su amada esposa y mejor amiga Barbara después de una breve batalla contra el cáncer. Todos los días se la extraña profundamente. Pero su espíritu y energía permanecen en el pequeño pedazo de paraíso que crearon juntos a través de las flores que plantó, los gatitos que cuidó y, por supuesto, el negocio que construyó con Sloop, su socio en todas las cosas.
A pesar de esta gran pérdida, la línea Sloop Jones de moda de celebración y arte mural continúa creciendo y prosperando, y el equipo continúa con el espíritu de Barbara.
In 1986, Sloop and Barbara set off on an open-ended Caribbean adventure that eventually landed them on the East End of St. John. They rented a beach shack, hitched rides to town and back (nearly impossible in this remote neighborhood), and set about building a business and life together on St. John.
With the 300 t-shirts they brought from Massachusetts, Sloop and Barbara started what is now an iconic St. John fashion line: comfortable, colorful clothing hand-painted in Sloop’s signature style. In the early days, carrying t-shirts with them wherever they went, they’d sell on the ferry boat to St. Thomas. And when they ran out of merchandise, Sloop and Barbara were happy to sell the shirts off their backs.
Almost three decades later, the Sloop Jones brand is a St. John staple, employing several special island folks year round. The one-of-a-kind pieces of clothing and wall art embody what so many people love about the Caribbean—the celebration of color, the stunning natural beauty, the soft trade winds’ breeze, the quirky characters, and laid back vibe— all those things that make island life enchanting.
In July 2014, Sloop lost his beloved wife and best friend Barbara after a brief battle with cancer. Every day she is deeply missed. But her spirit and energy remain on the little piece of paradise they created together through the flowers she planted, the kitties she cared for, and of course, the business she built with Sloop, her partner in all things.
Despite this great loss the Sloop Jones line of celebratory fashion and wall art continues to grow and thrive, and the team carries on in Barbara’s spirit.
