Cuando mi futura esposa, Deneen y yo estábamos saliendo y asistiendo a la Universidad de Winnipeg a principios de la década de 1990, hice una conexión con un pariente lejano de ella en una boda familiar en Edmonton. Brad era dueño de una tienda de regalos en Winnipeg llamada "Splinters" que se especializaba en regalos de madera. Operaba una tienda en el centro comercial Portage Place y tenía un quiosco en The Forks. En Navidad, también instaló quioscos en Polo Park y el centro comercial St. Vital Centre. De alguna manera, le ofreció a Deneen un trabajo, y ella trabajó para él durante un par de años. No mucho tiempo en su posición, volvió a poner su espalda completamente fuera y necesitaba encontrar un reemplazo para un par de turnos. Nadie más estaba disponible para cubrirla, así que recibió permiso para preguntarme si podía cubrirla. Por supuesto que dije "sí", y a partir de ese momento, yo también fui un empleado oficial. Nos encantaron los regalos de madera únicos que Brad vendió. Tenía surtidos de bolígrafos de madera, joyas, cajas, patos tallados, cajas de baratijas, etc. Uno de los más vendidos fueron las cajas de rompecabezas de madera. Fueron extremadamente populares durante la temporada navideña, y pasamos la mayoría de nuestros turnos ocupados mostrando a la gente cómo abrirlos y cerrarlos. Una vez, cuando Brad necesitaba reabastecer todos sus quioscos, me llevó con él a su casa para recoger el producto. Cuando vi las filas de estanterías llenas de existencias en su sótano, me quedé asombrado. Recuerdo haber pensado que algún día podría verme haciendo lo mismo. Eventualmente, Brad tuvo la oportunidad de comprar una tienda de regalos más grande en The Forks, y cerró Splinters.

Avance rápido hasta 2007, ahora 9 años casados y 4 hijos después. Poco después de mudarnos al Lower Mainland, una vez más cogí el gusanillo empresarial y decidí que yo también quería comenzar un negocio secundario. Recordé los productos de madera que solíamos vender y comencé a buscar artesanos con los que asociarnos. Sabía que quería ofrecer regalos únicos, y me encantó la idea de vender productos artesanales de alta calidad. Somos canadienses orgullosos, por lo que siempre mantenemos los ojos abiertos para los regalos hechos en Canadá, pero también ambos hemos viajado, por lo que nos complace ofrecer artículos únicos hechos a mano de todo el mundo, particularmente de comercio justo y ecológicos. Con ese criterio en mente, comenzamos nuestra búsqueda, y los primeros productos que importamos fueron las mismas cajas de rompecabezas que solíamos vender en Splinters en Winnipeg. Pasó otro año antes de que construyera un sitio web, así que comenzamos a llevar las cajas de rompecabezas, y algunos otros artículos, a exposiciones de artesanía locales. Obtuvimos las mismas reacciones encantadas hacia ellos aquí, y yo estaba oficialmente 'enganchado'.

Eventualmente, nuestro negocio evolucionó hacia la fabricación de letreros. Al principio teníamos otro artesano que hacía nuestros letreros, pero después de que nos dijera que ya no podía hacerlo, sabíamos que íbamos a tener que empezar a hacerlos nosotros mismos. El proceso fue largo y no tan fácil, pero hemos desarrollado un amor por el oficio, ¡y hacerlo juntos es una bendición que no podríamos haber imaginado! When my my wife-to-be, Deneen and I were dating and attending the University of Winnipeg in the early 1990ʼs, I made a connection with a distant relative of her's at a family wedding in Edmonton. Brad owned a gift shop in Winnipeg called "Splinters" that specialized in wooden gifts. He operated a store at Portage Place mall, and had a kiosk at The Forks. At Christmastime, he also set up kiosks at Polo Park and St. Vital Centre mall. Somehow, he offered Deneen a job, and she worked for him for a couple of years. Not too long into her position, she put her back completely out, and needed to find a replacement for a couple of shifts. No one else was available to cover for her, so she received permission to ask me if I could cover. Of course I said “yes”, and from that point on, I was an official employee, too. We loved the unique wooden gifts Brad sold. He had assortments of wooden pens, jewellery, boxes, carved ducks, trinket boxes, etc. One of the top sellers was wooden puzzle boxes. They were extremely popular during the holiday season, and we spent most of our busy shifts showing people how to open and close them. Once, when Brad needed to restock all of his kiosks, he took me with him to his home to pick up product. When I saw the rows of shelving units filled with stock in his basement, I was in awe. I remember thinking that I could see myself doing the same thing someday. Eventually, Brad had an opportunity to purchase a larger gift store at The Forks, and he closed Splinters down.

Fast forward to 2007 - now 9 years married and 4 kids later. Soon after we moved to the Lower Mainland, I once again caught the entrepreneurial bug, and decided that I, too, wanted to start a side business. I remembered the wooden products that we used to sell and began to search for artisans to partner with. I knew I wanted to offer unique gifts, and loved the idea of selling high-quality, hand-crafted products. We are proud Canadians, so we always keep our eyes open for Canadian made gifts, but we have also both travelled, so we were happy to offer unique hand crafted items from around the world, particularly fair-trade and eco-friendly. With that criteria in mind, we began our search, and the very first products we imported were the same puzzle boxes we used to sell at Splinters in Winnipeg. It was another year before I built a website, so we began taking the puzzle boxes, and a few other items, to local craft shows. We got the same delighted reactions to them out here, and I was officially ʻhookedʼ.

Eventually, our business evolved into sign making. At first we had another artisan craft our signs, but after he told us that he couldn't do it any longer, we knew that we were going to have to start making them ourselves. The process was long and not so easy, but we have developed a love for the craft, and doing it together is such a blessing we couldn't have imagined!
