Una prospettiva moderna sulla cartografia
A Modern Perspective on Cartography
Saluti,
Steve
Maps have fascinated me for as long as I can remember, but my professional journey into cartography began after earning a science degree on Canada’s East Coast. Encouraged by a family member who was a university Geography professor, I pursued postgraduate studies in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and have since built a career working on projects covering every continent and continuing to develop my expertise in GIS and remote sensing while deepening my understanding of landscapes, terrain, and spatial data.
While I enjoyed the challenges of professional GIS, I was continually drawn to the artistic side of cartography. That passion eventually led me to explore advanced terrain visualization techniques that go far beyond traditional hillshading. By combining digital elevation models, cartographic mapping, and modern 3D rendering, I am able to reveal landscapes in ways that feel both familiar and entirely new.
What inspires me most is the opportunity to breathe new life into historical maps. Many of the source maps I work from were created decades ago often by exceptionally skilled cartographers working with tools and techniques that predate modern computing. Their work captured not only geography, but also the spirit of an era. My goal is not to alter that legacy, but to celebrate it by presenting these maps from a fresh perspective while preserving the character and craftsmanship of the originals.
Today, I'm proud to say that the maps from my shop have reached over 50 countries worldwide, been featured in magazines, documentaries, even a textbook. Each piece I create is produced with the same sense of curiosity and appreciation for the art of cartography. Whether the map depicts a place you call home, a landscape you've explored, or a region that inspires your imagination, I hope it encourages you to see the world with fresh eyes and a deeper appreciation for the cartographers whose work laid the foundation for it all.
Thank you for visiting my shop and for sharing in this passion for maps.
Cheers,
Steve
