Myrtle Burl Hollow Form/Vase 10” x 6”
Myrtle Burl wood commonly called Pepper-wood comes from the coastal areas of California and Oregon. It’s beautiful grain and figure patterns in the wood command big prices, especially the Burl wood. Burl wood is caused by an injury or scar to the tree during its development. As the tree grows new wood is formed over the injury. The grain patterns grow in multiple directions causing the unique Burl patterns. The darker upper half of this piece is the Burl wood.
The outside of the vase is turned then the inside is hollowed through the opening at the top of the turning. The lathe is run at 1200 to 1500 rpm. High speed and very sharp tools are required to achieve clean smooth cuts, especially on the natural edge rim of the vase.
