Audubon's artwork almost always includes background. In this Brown Pelican picture there's a lighthouse in the back. -
In much of Audubon's work the background can be almost as interesting as the birds. -
Audubon often hired other artists to do the floral settings for his birds, so he could concentrate on the main subject. -
Audubon shot and killed his subject matter before painting. This method often produced strange expressions in the end. -
John James Audubon was born in Haiti in 1785, raised in France and fled to America in 1803 to avoid Napoleon's army.

I have always been inspired by vintage American artwork. Some of my favorites include 20th century USA travel posters and JJ Audubon bird lithographs. This shop focuses on John James Audubon, but also includes other pieces of Americana as well.
