De afgelopen 50 jaar heb ik gewerkt als reclame-copywriter, maar nu heel veel ultrascherpe jonge mensen en tools zoals Chat GPT de arena hebben betreden, hoop ik mijn snel slinkende inkomen te vergroten door wat van mijn gedichten in koopwaar-op-Etsy als een soort Weesgegroet-pasje dat in de ether van het internet wordt geslingerd.

Toen ik voor het eerst begon met het schrijven van gedichten (in de jaren tachtig), krabbelde ik haastig wat ruwe aantekeningen op (aangezien gedichten de neiging hebben om zonder voorafgaande kennisgeving te verdampen), en vervolgens typte ik het gedicht plichtsgetrouw uit, de pagina aflopend volgens de conventioneel formaat.

Op een gegeven moment drong het tot me door dat de ruwe aantekeningen veel interessanter waren dan het typen op een pagina, dus begon ik de gedichten met de hand te schrijven, wat uiteindelijk uitgroeide tot illustraties op canvas. Het is geweldig, erg leuk om gedichten visueel uit te drukken, en ik moedig alle dichters ten zeerste aan om het eens te proberen.

For the last 50 years or so I’ve worked as an advertising copywriter, but now that loads of ultra-sharp young folks and tools like Chat GPT have entered the arena, I’m hoping to augment my fast-dwindling income by translating some of my poems into merchandise-on-Etsy as a sort of Hail Mary pass hurled into the ether of the Internet.

When I first started writing poems (in the 1980’s), I’d hastily scribble down some rough notes (since poems do have a way of evaporating without notice) then I’d dutifully type the poem out, going down the page according to the conventional format.

At some point it dawned on me that the rough notes were much more interesting than type on a page, so I began to hand letter the poems, which eventually evolved into illustrations on canvas. It is great, great fun to express poems visually, and I strongly encourage all poets to give it a try.
