From the Beginning
La idea
Durante mis estudios de arte y diseño, acuñé la frase «Diseñando Vidas» para usarla como nombre de mi empresa de diseño de interiores. Para mí, representaba mi deseo no solo de diseñar una habitación, sino de ayudar a mis clientes a diseñar sus vidas de forma intencionada, empezando por sus hogares.
Para ayudar, no para hacer daño.
Después de graduarme, me casé con mi novio de la universidad y me mudé a Virginia. Allí continué trabajando en diseño de interiores para una empresa local y comencé a sentar las bases de Designing Life. Una de las lecciones más importantes que aprendí fue durante mi trabajo de diseño en Williamsburg, Virginia. Aprendí que la mayoría de las empresas de diseño se aprovechan de mujeres que sufren y que necesitan desesperadamente sentirse seguras de sí mismas. Las mujeres llegaban queriendo que su casa estuviera mejor decorada que la de sus vecinos. La empresa para la que trabajaba contaba con ello.
Entonces decidí que Designing Life no se aprovecharía de las mujeres necesitadas. Designing Life estaría al alcance de las mujeres que desearan que su hogar reflejara su vida y las enriqueciera, en lugar de consumir su tiempo y recursos. La madre de mi esposo era maestra y mi madre es enfermera, así que quería que Designing Life ofreciera productos y servicios accesibles para mujeres maravillosas como nuestras madres. ¿Por qué las maestras y enfermeras no deberían tener acceso a recursos de diseño? Por eso, Designing Life sería diferente.
El nacimiento... de un bebé y de un negocio.
Mi esposo y yo nos mudamos a Mississippi y la vida cambió drásticamente. ¡Estábamos esperando un bebé! Continué trabajando en decoración y diseño durante los meses previos al nacimiento de mi hijo, pero cuando llegó a mi vida supe que quería quedarme en casa para ser su mamá a tiempo completo. Sin embargo, seguía queriendo dedicarme al diseño, ya que formaba parte de mi vida.
Mi objetivo es desarrollar recursos de planificación para el hogar y la vida diaria que ayuden a mis clientes a gestionar mejor sus hogares y sus vidas. Creo recursos imprimibles para ayudar a familias y personas a planificar sus días, la limpieza y los horarios de sus hijos.
Noticias actuales
Ahora, 17 años después, tengo una hija en su último año de preparatoria y sigo creando útiles productos imprimibles para mujeres que desean diseñar sus vidas. Reabro mi tienda después de un largo receso dedicado a lo que realmente importa: mi familia. En lugar de tener una atención dividida, quiero usar mi tienda como un canal para la creatividad, sin descuidar la educación en casa durante mi último año. En una sociedad que valora la multitarea, me he dado cuenta de que concentrarme en una sola cosa a la vez es un objetivo mucho más enriquecedor.
The Idea
While in school for art and design, I coined the phrase Designing Life to use as my business name for interior design projects. To me, it represented my desire to not just design a room, but to help clients purposefully design their lives starting with their homes.
To Help, Not to Hurt
After school, I married my college sweetheart and moved to Virginia. There I continued in interior design with a local firm and I began to set up the foundations for Designing Life. One of the biggest things that I learned was through my design job in Williamsburg, Virginia. I learned that most design businesses feed on women who are hurting and who desperately need to feel like they have it all together. Women came in wanting to have their home decorated better than their neighbors. The firm I worked for counted on it.
I decided then that Designing Life would not prey on women with needy hearts. Designing Life would be available to women who wanted their home to reflect their lives and have their home build them up instead of being a drain on their time and their resources. My husband’s mother was a teacher and my mother is a nurse, so I wanted Designing Life to have products and services that were available to wonderful women like our mothers. Why should teachers and nurses not have access to design resources? So Designing Life would be different.
Birthing . . . a baby and a business
My husband and I moved to Mississippi and life changed dramatically. We were expecting a baby! I continued working in decor and design those months before my son was born, but when he came into my life I knew I wanted to stay home to be his full time mommy. However, I still wanted to do design since design was a part of my life.
My goal is to develop home and life planning resources to help my clients to manage their homes and lives well on a daily basis. I create printable resources to aid families and individual persons to plan their days, their cleaning, and their children’s schedules.
Current News
Now, 17 years later, I have a senior in high school, and am still creating useful printable products for women who want to design their lives. I am reopening my shop after a long hiatus of focusing in on what is important, my family. Instead of having a split focus, I want to use my shop as a conduit for creativity, while maintaining full focus on my last year homeschooling. In a society who celebrates multitasking, I've some to realize being focused on one thing at a time is much richer of a goal.
